Hi Becca,
Thanks a lot for the suggestion. I'll get it and will read the EC ning discussion as well. I appreciate your input as well as your reading my blog! Have you taught 7th grade for long? I'm sure you could offer all sorts of insights that I'm still missing!

Thanks

Lynn-

I've been reading your blog for a while. I too teach Grade 7 English. They are an interesting bunch, especially after teaching high school.

I was wondering if I might offer you a book suggestion. I just finished reading "The Book Whisperer" by Donalyn Miller. It has revolutionized my thoughts about reading, teaching reading, and encouraging my students to read. I teach a 42-minute block of English (not nearly enough time!) but try to hold out at least 10 minutes a day for silent reading.

You might also be interested in the discussion surrounding this book on the English Companion Ning. Check it out here: http://englishcompanion.ning.com/group/ecningbookclubbookwhisperer

Just a thought from one English teacher to another,

Stolen hard drive? I laughed out loud. Who would think to do such a thing?

My projector and interwrite board are supposed to be installed tomorrow. Fingers crossed that they will get along and work well together. It would be so cool to use them this year.

Have a great year, Lynn!

Hi, Lynn,
I use tennis ball cans to hold markers and colored pencils. The thing to know about markers and highlighters is that if they're the fat ones, the cans won't hold a ton of them. Another thing to know is that the lids tend to give out before the cans, so hang onto lids as they come your way. I've always kept the supplies separate with the little ones, but I've seen upper grades where they mix the supplies so that the can functions more like a complete art caddy.

Also, I think if you're going to do reading with quiet music, you should ask students if they have any music they'd like to share. Obviously, you'd want to listen to it first, but I've loved the results in my classroom. I get to know my students a little better and they get to share something they like with the class.

Have a great time making your classroom your own and starting a fresh year!

I agree, however on the other hand, there are many kids, English Learners, who are passing everything and just want to come to Summer School to have something to do besides work in the family garden. It's the only way they can see their friends and gives them some enrichment and extra class time. These guys were really hurt by the cancellation of summer school. The pot of money which funds it is intended for kids who are in danger of not passing the CAHSEE, and these kids fall into that category as well as those who have chosen to do nothing all year. They are the ones for whom I feel badly.

Good for your school district. I wish ours would cancel summer school. As a tax payer it makes me furious to think I have paid for the child to attend school all year and now I have to pay for him to retake the same material in summer school where it's much easier because the teachers don't want to put in the effort that went into the year-long class. Kids use summer school as a crutch. Oh, and we have night school too which is just the same thing.

You are a much braver woman than I am. Because I came into teaching later in life, there is no way I can teach for 30 years or even 25. The grind of the inner city school has worn me down and I know it is time to do something different.

I never expected to stay at teaching this long. My previous jobs had only been for 2 and 11 years so I figured after 10 years or so, I'd go find something else. The years rolled on, and I just finished number 20. I work with wonderful teachers but they are leaving and the administration refuses to replace them so the work gets even harder.

2017 will be here, however, before we know it. Eight years ago it was 2001 and who ever thought that would arrive? I remember being the class adviser for the 2000 class and everyone laughing at me in 1996. The year 2000 was just a fairytale. Life is going quickly, be sure to do what you love.
